Many of the old buildings Rose shot in 1985 remain today, but the life they support appears to be from a different universe.Cbgb, the famous punk club, was around the corner from where I lived, and Soho was full of artists and galleries.It's an urbanistically fascinating place, regardless of what one thinks about gentrification.It was also a moment of great creativity in music and art.Alongside the artists written narrative, these five images demonstrate Cowens ability to speak bluntly about drugs, sex, and aids, while juxtaposing heavy subject matter with fleeting elements of tenderness and beauty.What was your first reaction to seeing the photos 27 years later?The High Line threads through and between the buildings.The new buildings, many of which are architecturally interesting, are integrated into the historic cityscape.The book documents New Yorks Meatpacking District in the early 90s when it was still an outlaw area.
